Rich,
Early in the 1990's, a
small ad in the AMC magazine caught my eye. It was for a Jewish outdoors club
in Boston. I cut out the ad but did nothing with it for a half year. I thought
that Mosaic was probably a religious outdoors club. The second time I saw the
same ad, I called for information. Nancy Kaplan, long a mainstay of the Boston
Mosaic Club, answered my queries & made the organization sound like it was just
what I was searching for, except for its distant location. I joined the club
anyway, participating in Boston Mosaic hikes once or twice a year at the front
end or back end of a week's driving vacation to NH or Maine. I was really
pleased to have found a such a nice, sociable group of alert, active Jewish
professional peers.
A year or so after I joined Boston Mosaic, Nancy called to tell me that Tzionah
Rapaport was starting a Mosaic Club in the NY area. I called Tzionah and
attended her hike to Bonticou Crag, in Mohonk; After a few more outings with
the NY club, I agreed to start leading events. I felt that our club was an
excellent social and athletic organization. Eventually, I became the club's
third President, which was a very rewarding experience. Interacting with the
core volunteers that make our club successful, resulted in many lasting
friendships. I'd like to thank those who carried substantial administrative
responsibility during my reign: Mark Schweber, Ellen Blankfein, Melinda Maidens,
Rick Levey, Andrea Klein, Andrea Parks (who married Mark Schweber) Janet Mansky,
Len Feuer, Howard Israel, Herb Gecht, Ellen Estrin, Ann Salzberg, Cindy Zirkin,
Bill Sugarman & Linda Schechter. Changes that I fostered for the club included
an expansion of the variety of our activities.
A volunteer organization retains vitality by periodic rotation of leadership. I
thoroughly enjoyed my time at the helm, and am pleased to remain active as an
event leader. See you on the trails!
